Cooperative institutions, particularly small urban cooperative banks and credit societies find it difficult to face competition from bigger players in the field, as the latter have at their command resources, technology and managerial competence, far greater than what cooperative banks have.

VISION FOR URBAN BANKS

Vision of UCBs is to be sound and strong, truly member owned, democratically controlled and ethically managed banking institutions with high degree of transparency, providing need based banking services essentially to the middle class, lower-middle class and marginalized sections of society."

 
 

ADVOCACY BY NAFCUB

 
  • Permission for all Grade I banks to expand without much restrictions.

  • Level playing field to the urban banks wherever regulatory norms are at par with those for commercial banks.

  • Recognition of the fact that the client base of urban co-operative banks entail their higher risk taking; RBI to prescribe prudential norms, taking this aspect into account.

  • Need for a structure that provides institutional protection in terms of liquidity and other supports to hundreds of stand along small urban banks.

  • Provide support to technology adoption efforts of UCBs
