National
Museum
located on Janpath is a treasure house of India
’s glorious past. It has in possession over
2,00,000 works of exquisite art both of Indian
and Foreign origin covering more than 5,000
years of cultural heritage. The extraordinary
collection represents the entire span of Indian
civilization from pre-historic times. Its
galleries include finds from the Indus Valley
Civilization, superb sculptures in stone;
bronzes from the Chola period; the largest
collection of miniature paintings in the world;
manuscripts, a Buddhist Gallery including relics
of the Buddha from Piprahwa; the exquisite
Jewelry Gallery; the Anthropological Gallery of
tribal art; galleries devoted to decorative and
applied arts; Maritime Heritage and
Pre-Columbian art; and the Central Asian
Antiquities; Gallery of Auriel Stein's finds
along the ancient Silk Route (the great murals,
however, are on display at the adjacent
Archaeological Survey of India).

National
Gallery of Modern Art,
housed in the residence of Jaipur's former
maharajas near India Gate, has a superb
collection of paintings dating from 150 years
ago to the present day. Company School paintings
of the 19th and early 20th centuries and the
works of Rabindranath Tagore, Jammi Roy and
Amrita Sher Gil hold pride of place amidst
exhibits, which give an overview of the
evolution of modern Indian paintings and
sculpture. The National Museum and the National
Gallery of Modern Art periodically organize
special exhibitions. |

Crafts
Museum
at Pragati Maidan Grounds. It has galleries
displaying India 's rich tradition of
handicrafts. An added attraction is the
presence of craftsperson who are bought here
from different parts of the country to
demonstrate their skills. It is open from 10am
to 5pm daily.

National
Rail Museum
is located in Chanakya Puri close to the
diplomatic area. It has a unique collection of
rail engines and locomotives. India was among
the countries which had railway lines since
19th century. The locomotives in the museums
are displayed in open. There is also a small
in house museum which gives the details of the
progress and development in the history of
railway in India. Its vintage display includes
the oldest steam engine in the world, the
still working Fairy Queen (1855); the cabin of
the Prince of Wales (1876); the saloon car of
the Maharaja of Baroda (1886); the Viceregal
Dinning Car (1889); the carriage of the
Maharaja of Mysore made of teak covered with
ivory; and the carriage in which the ashes of
Gandhiji were carried in 1948. Children can
enjoy a ride on the miniature rail track.

Science Centre and Museum
is located near Pragati Maidan. This center is
famous for the models which can be operated by
the visitor himself. Children are particularly
fascinated by the mysteries of science. It is
open through out the week except on Mondays.

Museum
of Natural History
located on the Barakhamba Road gives an over
perspective of the evolution of Earth and its
natural history. The museum is closed on
Mondays.

Nehru
Memorial Museum and Planetarium
is located at Teen Murti house, the residence
of India 's first Prime minister Jawaharlal
Nehru. After his death the house was converted
into a memorial. The Nehru memorial has a
collection of gifts and many other items which
he possessed. Nehru Planetarium is within the
compound of Teen Murti. This planetarium gives
a overview of the Indian Space program. There
are daily film shows which are screened in a
specially designed auditorium. These films are
meant to give information about the Universe
or any other topic related to that. The
Capsule in which Rakesh Sharma went into space
is also kept here.

Shankar’s
International Doll’s Museum
located on Bahadur Shah Jafar Marg has a
unique collection of dolls from different
parts of India as well as from other countries
of the world. These dolls reflect the
tradition and culture of the region from where
they come. Children Book Trust of India is In
the same building. This is an organization
which is committed to provide quality books
for the young.

Gandhi Memorial Museum
has a collection of memorabilia on Mahatma
Gandhi.

Tibet House Museum
on Lodi Road has a fine collection of tankas,
jewelry and ritual objects.
